The Barber Stone is foreground left. In the middle distance are stones of the southern inner circle. The pair of stones furthest right mark the southern entrance. Avebury is about 17, crow flying, miles north of Stonehenge. Even today its earthwork, enclosing an area metres in diameter, is impressive. When built the bank would have been something like 27 metres wide at the base and 6 metres high. The ditch was 9 metres deep and some 14 metres wide at the top, tapering to less than half that at the bottom. There were entrance causeways at the north, south, east and west.

Optically Stimulated Luminescence Dating

Save By Saturday afternoon, the suspected Columbian mammoth remains uncovered April 17 on the shore of the Buffalo Bill Reservoir had taken on something like a picnic atmosphere. A yard stretch of neon pink and orange pin flags snapped briskly in a stiff breeze off the water, parents with young children strolled up to where the excavation site was cordoned off, and boombox banjo tunes floated above the excited chatter of scientists and researchers called to what could be one of the hottest discoveries in the Rocky Mountain West.

Stormy weather that moved in Monday threatened the fragile remains, forcing crews to move quickly to secure the find, and they also face a longer-term threat: We needed to act as quickly as we could. The excitement instead was focused on its age:

Abstract. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating is increasingly used to estimate the age of fluvial deposits. A significant limitation, however, has been that conventional techniques of sampling and dose rate estimation are suitable only for thick (>60 cm) layers consisting of sand size or finer grains.

Due to decreasing availability and rising production costs for raw materials such as rare earth elements REEs and precious metals, the mining of secondary resources from waste gained extremely in importance. An improved detection of valuable materials such as Au, Cu and rare earth elements would strengthen the sorting process of the e-waste, increasing the separation success tremendously. Both techniques are high-sensitive, non-invasive and can be optimized for fast-imaging.

Thus, larger streams of recyclates could be processed more accurately in shorter time. This project is funded by the BMWi. The availability of film material, which is one of the most important materials in such personal dosimetry, is not warranted on the long term. Other materials have been sought as possible replacements. The dependency of sintered BeO to radiation energy is close to tissue. Because of this favourable property, BeO is one of the phosphors of choice in personal dosimetry.

The modular equipment provides the manual readout of a single BeO-dosimeter. An automation attachment provides the opportunity to measure batches of 20 dosimeters stored in magazines. A total of 10 of such magazines are located in a wheel, which is software driven for dosimeter measurement according to user definitions. In OSL dosimetry it is sufficient to measure part of the signal, which allows re-reading, for dose determination.

Four Planetary Landscapes That Scientists Can’t Explain

A lidar image of mysterious features on Earth called a Carolina bays. The image was taken in South Carolina, showing four Carolina bays, each between a half a kilometer and a kilometer long. The image uses hue-saturation-value mapping to highlight elevation changes in the bays, from the ridges to the shallow, circular depressions, revealing features that can often get overlooked from a ground-level view. The technique creates a continuum of colors across the rainbow, repeating the rainbow several times, to capture extremely fine details as elevation changes.

Half Billion-Year-Old Fossil Clue to How Worms Evolved A feature of the tomb is a long shelf, or “burial bed,” which according to tradition was where the body of Jesus Christ was laid out following crucifixion. Such shelves and niches, hewn from limestone caves, are a common feature in tombs of wealthy 1st-century Jerusalem Jews.

The marble cladding that covers the “burial bed” is believed to have been installed in at the latest, and most likely was present since the mid s, according to pilgrim accounts. When the tomb was opened on the night of October 26, , scientists were surprised by what they found beneath the marble cladding: No one, however, was ready to claim that this might be the first physical evidence for the earliest Roman shrine on the site.

Scholars discuss whether the tomb of Christ is actually the tomb of Christ and how it would have looked. The new test results, which reveal the lower slab was most likely mortared in place in the mid-fourth century under the orders of Emperor Constantine, come as a welcome surprise to those who study the history of the sacred monument. During their year-long restoration of the Edicule, the scientists were also able to determine that a significant amount of the burial cave remains enclosed within the walls of the shrine.

Mortar samples taken from remains of the southern wall of the cave were dated to and , which provide additional evidence for construction works from the Roman period, as well as a documented 16th-century restoration. Mortar taken from the tomb entrance has been dated to the 11th century and is consistent with the reconstruction of the Edicule following its destruction in The mortar samples were independently dated at two separate labs using optically stimulated luminescence OSL , a technique that determines when quartz sediment was most recently exposed to light.

The scientific results will be published by Moropoulou and her team in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science:

Loess near Hunyuan , Shanxi province, China. Loess is homogeneous , porous , friable , pale yellow or buff , slightly coherent , typically non- stratified and often calcareous. Loess grains are angular with little polishing or rounding and composed of crystals of quartz , feldspar , mica and other minerals. Loess can be described as a rich, dust-like soil.

It generally occurs as a blanket deposit that covers areas of hundreds of square kilometers and tens of meters thick. Loess often stands in either steep or vertical faces. This soil has a characteristic called vertical cleavage which makes it easily excavated to form cave dwellings, a popular method of making human habitations in some parts of China. Loess will erode very readily.

In several areas of the world, loess ridges have formed that are aligned with the prevailing winds during the last glacial maximum. These are called ” paha ridges” in America and “greda ridges” in Europe. The form of these loess dunes has been explained by a combination of wind and tundra conditions.

The creator, Abassi, created two humans and then decided to not allow them to live on earth. His wife, Atai, persuaded him to let them do so. In order to control the humans, Abassi insisted that they eat all their meals with him, thereby keeping them from growing or hunting food. He also forbade them to procreate. Soon, though, the woman began growing food in the earth, and they stopped showing up to eat with Abassi. Then the man joined his wife in the fields, and before long there were children also.

Abassi blamed his wife for the way things had turned out, but she told him she would handle it. She sent to earth death and discord to keep the people in their place. Scientific dating has confirmed the long residence of Aboriginal people in Australia. A number of methods are used, all of which have their advantages, limitations and level of accuracy. Complex dating problems often use a variety of techniques and information to arrive at the best answer. Artefacts and other materials can be dated in relative terms by observing which layer of sediments they are found in. This applies the geological principle that under normal circumstances younger layers of sediment will be deposited on top of older layers.

This ‘law of superimposition’ works in the well-defined layers of the Willandra lunettes , but only dates objects as younger or older than adjacent layers.

The dating game. by Tas Walker. In western New South Wales, Australia, part of a semi-arid desert has been set aside as a World Heritage area. 1 This may seem curious for such an inhospitable region. But there is a good reason.

Our approach is demonstrated by the study of an emblematic early medieval Basilica Saint Seurin in Bordeaux whose oldest building phases have never been well-understood and dated before due to the lack of written sources and archaeological findings. We mainly focus on the analyses of mortar as an omnipresent and non-recyclable material whose making is undoubtedly contemporary to the building process.

The present work arises from close and continuous collaboration between archaeologists and archaeometers both in situ and during post-excavation analyses. SG-OSL dating of mortar, as the most innovative aspect of the study, was combined with mortar characterization, radiocarbon dating of charcoals and partly also with archaeomagnetic and thermoluminescence dating of bricks for a cross-check of chronological data.

We identified and dated several independent building phases in the crypt of the present church where mortar was the only building material preserved. By combining physical dating methods with stratigraphic constraints based on archaeological interpretations, all the findings were used to construct a chronological model that proves continuity in occupation of the site between the 5th and the 12th centuries, reflecting its high cultural and symbolic value. By the inter-connection of mortar dating by SG-OSL with archaeology and other fields of archaeometry, we set up a renewed interdisciplinary working model for building archaeology that opens interesting perspectives for the future of this research field.

Important differences in preparation technology of mortar are observed.

Luminescence dating (including thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence) is a type of dating methodology that measures the amount of light emitted from energy stored in certain rock types and derived soils to obtain an absolute date for a specific event that occurred in the past.

My high profile collaborative research focuses on sandscapes as an archive for understanding past depositional processes and environmental changes which have shapes the landscape we live in. Three themes are centred around this: Warm and cold-climate aeolian sands Luminescence dating Research is currently trying to extend the application of luminescence dating to glacial and ice marginal sediments. Previous research I have carried out has investigated cold-climate aeolian sediments and periglacial features to understand past glacial environments in Canada and NW Europe.

Language English The surface of Mars has been subject to aeolian, fluvial, and periglacial activity in the relatively recent past. Unfortunately, chronological dating of recent events on Mars is difficult as the errors associated with crater counting are comparable to younger ages approx. Consequently, techniques to quantify the ages of geological processes on Mars have become an important area of research.

Optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating is one candidate technique for in-situ dating of the deposition of Martian surface sediments. This method can aid in developing a geological and climatic history of the last million years on Mars.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) is used widely for reconstructing past radiation exposure, either in connection with accidental release of radionuclides into the environment, or for dating.

Archaeologists have unearthed what are potentially the oldest weapons ever found in North America: If the discovery, located about 40 miles 64 kilometers northwest of Austin, Texas, can be verified, it could strengthen the argument that people settled the Americas earlier than previously thought. But not all experts are convinced by the evidence, with some saying the dating techniques used are unconventional.

The stone-made spearpoints, each measuring up to 4 inches 10 centimeters long, are so old they predate the Clovis people, who for decades were thought to be the first people to populate the Americas. Who were the first Americans? Exactly how and when the first people reached the Americas is still a mystery.
